Delivered under the expert guidance of SAAD-accredited trainers from the Society for the Advancement of Anaesthesia in Dentistry, this programme provides structured, supervised experience in both Intravenous (IV) and Inhalation Sedation (IS), preparing dental nurses for a greater role in the delivery of conscious sedation within dental practice.

Programme Overview

This specialised mentorship offers hands-on clinical exposure for dental nurses looking to gain competence and confidence in conscious sedation. Whether you choose to focus on Inhalation Sedation, Intravenous Sedation, or complete both pathways, our structured mentorship is aligned with current national sedation guidelines and offers practical training under close supervision.

Upon completing accredited theory training and obtaining your Immediate Life Support (ILS) certification, you will be eligible to begin practical case-based mentorship at our clinical centre in London.

Supervised Experience Requirements

Participants are required to complete 30 cases in total—20 intravenous sedation (IVS) and 10 inhalation sedation (IS). You may choose to complete one or both of the techniques with Sage Academy, based on your professional goals and prior training.

Intravenous Sedation (IVS)

Observe and assist in 20 IV sedation cases.

Participate in all stages of care, from patient admission and monitoring to recovery and discharge.

Gain insight into patient safety protocols, team-based sedation delivery, and aftercare.

Inhalation Sedation (IS)

Observe and assist in 10 IS sedation cases.

Participate in the full patient journey, including preparation, monitoring, and post-sedation support.

Learn how to support clinicians in delivering effective and safe sedation for anxious patients.

Training Location

All clinical training sessions are conducted at the Sage Dental Referral Centre, located at 89-91 South Road, Southall, UB1 1SQ (London). This dedicated referral hub is fully equipped for IV and IS sedation training, allowing nurses to gain real-world experience under the mentorship of senior sedation professionals.

We welcome dental nurses from across the UK to join us at our central location, designed to meet the evolving needs of modern dental teams.

Structured Work-Based Assessment & Continuous Support

As part of the programme, you will receive a comprehensive mentorship pack including:

Sedation Logbook (for each technique)

DOPS Forms (Direct Observation of Procedural Skills)

Sedation Practice Checklist

Document Submission Tracker (to be completed by your mentor)

Each case is carefully supervised and assessed by our experienced team, ensuring that you progress with confidence while meeting all academic and regulatory requirements.

Entry Requirements

To enrol in the Sedation Mentorship Programme for Dental Nurses, the following prerequisites must be met:

Completion of accredited theory training in dental sedation (IS and/or IV).

A valid Immediate Life Support (ILS) certification.

Submission of required documentation prior to the start of practical mentorship (a checklist will be provided upon registration).

✅ Step-by-Step Guide to Qualification in Conscious Sedation (Dental Nurses)

1. Meet the Eligibility Criteria

To begin your journey, you must:

Be a qualified dental nurse registered with the General Dental Council (GDC)

Hold a valid and active GDC registration number

This ensures you are ready to begin formal training in line with national clinical standards.

2. Complete the Theoretical Training (Flexible Option)

Before you can start the hands-on mentorship, you must complete the theoretical component of conscious sedation training.

This theory training can be completed online or in-person with any recognised provider that delivers courses aligned with national standards for dental sedation.

It typically includes 2–3 days of structured learning, covering:

Principles of conscious sedation

Sedation pharmacology

Patient safety and monitoring

Emergency protocols and sedation-related complications

3. Enrol in the SAGE Academy Sedation Mentorship Programme

Once you’ve completed the theoretical training, you’re eligible to enrol in our Sedation Mentorship Programme, which provides the essential practical experience required to gain full certification.

Work under the direct supervision of experienced sedation clinicians

Access real clinical environments where you observe and participate in sedation cases

Receive tailored guidance and skill development throughout your mentorship journey

4. Complete Required Sedation Cases

Your practical training must include the completion of:

✅ Intravenous (IV) Sedation – 20 Cases

10 cases where you assist the mentor during the procedure

10 cases where you perform sedation under the mentor’s supervision

✅ Inhalation Sedation – 10 Cases

5 cases where you assist

5 cases where you lead under guidance

This structured experience ensures you develop clinical confidence, safety awareness, and procedural expertise.

5. Maintain a Professional Logbook

All sedation cases must be accurately recorded in your logbook, which will include:

Type of sedation

Patient details

Role performed (assisting or leading)

Observations and reflections

Our team will support you in maintaining a compliant and complete record that meets certification standards.

6. Submit for Certification Review

Once your:

Theory is complete

Logbook is finalised

Cases have been signed off by your supervising clinician

We will review and submit your documentation for formal certification.

Sedation Dentist & Mentor

Dr. Manchuthan Navaratnarajah is a distinguished dental professional with a decade of experience in the field, registered with the General Dental Council since 2014. As an expert in managing anxious patients, he has developed a profound skill set in providing safe and effective sedation. Dr. Navaratnarajah is a SAAD-accredited sedation trainer, dedicated to mentoring dentists and dental nurses in mastering sedation techniques. Currently a final-year MSc candidate in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at University College London (UCL), Dr. Navaratnarajah combines academic excellence with practical expertise. He also serves as a Foundation Training (FT) Trainer for the Foundation Dentist Programme, playing a pivotal role in nurturing the next generation of dental professionals.
